Thermography seems to be the stepchild of early detection. In fact most women haven't even heard of it. There's something wrong with the dessemination of information about this cutting edge technology. It can warn women up to 10 years before a tumor is actually felt. The downside is that it's going to cost you about $200-$300 out of pocket. Why insurance won't pay for this is beyond me. I just had a bright idea! For those who have the ability to put money aside in a flexible spending account for medical expenses not covered by insurance, you can use it for this purpose. For others, it may be more of a challenge.

It seems as though the walks, the runs, the pink tee shirts and bracelets, the money that is raised for breast cancer awareness would include commercials, newspaper and magazine ads for this EASY, NON-INVASIVE, FDA APPROVED and RADIATION FREE screening. And you don't have to wait until you're 40 years old , it can be done as early as let say.....20. Are you getting angry yet?
The last time I was checked it was at 39. My doctor was happy with that number but I wasn't happy with that number, no not I. See my blog entry on the importance of vitamin D. I wanted an optimum level of between 50-70 ng/ml. Well......I had a new test done a couple of weeks ago and it's at 56!! Woo Hoo!

The major
role is to
improve calcium absorption from the small intestine.
Research shows low levels lead to a higher
incidence of breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian
cancer, as well as multiple myeloma.

Fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, and herring are good sources of vitamin D.

So again, I urge you, if your doctor hasn't brought up the subject, you must ask him or her for a test and see where your levels are. If they won't do it, I encourage you to find a doctor who will. Most doctors have understood the importance of vitamin d and it's research for the past few years. If they don't, then they haven't been brought up to speed. Now I'm off to celebrate with a nice lunch of salmon salad!
As I open up my current issue of AARP (I've had my card for several years now), I see a great article from Dr Oz, "24 hours to a longer life". He's known as America's favorite doctor. What I like about him is that he embraces a holistic natural lifestyle. He lists eight things you can do in a 24 hour period of time to add not just years but a quality to our lives. These are easy doable steps that are relatively inexpensive* and not hard to accomplish.

6 AM) Do Yoga, Reduce Stress. He goes on to explain that yoga can repair some of the damage our heart has encountered through the years by lowering our heart rate. This form of exercise can relax the blood vessels and reduce stress.

7 AM) Eat Breakfast, Look Younger~Start the day with oatmeal, not sugary cereals or donuts. Sugar has a way of attacting the collagen and elastin in our skin and it can AGE us. I've heard this before but it really made an impact on me today for some reason. I need all of the collagen and elastin I can get! Oatmeal is still super cheap and it raises blood sugar slowly. He says to add eggs in for the protein benefit. I'm cutting out eggs so I"ll skip that.

10 AM) Snack on Berries Help Stave Off Cancer~There are certain foods that starve cancer and berries are one of those foods. They contain antioxidants which reduce inflammation and oxidation. What gives them their red or purple or blue color is anthocyanins. In laboratory studies, anthocyanins inhibit growth of lung,
colon and leukemia cancer cells without affecting growth of healthy
cells. Decreased cancer development is also seen in animals given
anthocyanins. That sounds like natures chemo to me.

12 PM) Take a Walk, Build Muscle~ 15 min in the sun is what we need to get our daily dose of vitamin d. We may get it from a pill, but getting it from good ole' Mister Sun is natures intention. The simple act of walking helps build muscle mass.

3:30 PM) Take A Break, Supercharge Your Cells~The title says it all. He also suggests the Chinese herb astragalus as well.

6:00 PM) Eat Fish for Dinner, Boost Your Brain Health~Twice a week we should eat a 4-5 oz serving of an oily fish like salmon, tuna, sardines. The Omega 3 fatty acids in the fish help boost your memory. He also states that for memory, we should add 400mg of alpha-lipoic acid daily, 500mg of acetlyl L-cartinine twice daily and 500mg gingko daily with your meals. The supplements may keep your brain young and your memory sharp. Reduce your intake of processed meats, yes, bacon, sausage, and hot dogs. They contain nitrates which is linked to Alzheimer's disease and Cancer. In fact I would go so far as to say eliminate them entirely from your diet. It's actually lethal to the human body and we can do without them!

8:00 PM) Have Sex, Live Longer~Preliminary studies suggest that frequent sex might add years to your life. I'm just going to refer you to this site that gives us a great list of why sex is a life extender. It's not just for making babies (anymore).

10:00 PM) Hit the Sack Early, Reset Your Internal Clock~Simply put, get your 7-8 hours a night. When you don't get enough sleep your body goes into a state of stress. He sites new research that the aspirin some are prescribed to take for their heart health has more impact if taken at bedtime. And yes, we need to get to bed around 10 (or 11ish). Whatever time you go, it needs to add up to 7-8 hours of sleep on the other end.

*Wild Caught Fish is a bit pricey, but well worth the extra $$. Read here for the difference between farm raised and wild. If you're a vegan, then this obviouly isn't a part of what you would do.

Here is a seven-minute exercise routine from Dr. Oz. Simple enough for most, if not we can keep doing it until it becomes easy. I'm going to do it every day for the next week and see how I like it. I can take 7 min away from the computer and spend stretching it out.

I'd love to hear any of your self care strategies or techniques. I'll report on my Dr Oz exercise routine.
On October 15th, I'm taking classes to become a Certified Lymphedema Therapist. It's an intensive 11 day class in Charlotte, NC. I get to stay with my son, daughter-in-law and grand baby. Hopefully, I won't be much of an imposition to them since I'll be in class all day. I'll cook a few of their favorite dishes and maybe I'll earn my keep.

I've learned so much already in preparation for the class. With this certification, I'm going to set up programs and talks for women and take this show on the road (well, just in my hometown for starters).
Sometimes women have lymph nodes taken from under their armpit when they have breast cancer. In turn, that arm will swell with lymph fluid that has no place to go. That's where I come in. As a lymphedema therapist, I'll know how to drain that arm, bandage or use compression sleeves to get that arm as close to normal size as possible.

Lymphatic Drainage is also good for relieving headaches, pre and post surgery (especially liposuction procedures), fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, edema, and for one of the most important things, detoxing the body.

Stay tuned as I bring more information about my class, what I'm learning and what it can do for you!Sherri K Scott LMT,CLT Holistic Breast Health Instructorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08216024306305630836noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7759874288416662633.post-1841170706391757202011-04-26T22:28:00.002-04:002011-04-26T22:32:44.893-04:00Where have I been?/Make friends with your breasts!Hi everyone, I've been away, well not really. The lazy bug bit me and as you see I haven't posted since January. But fear not, I'm in the laboratory concocting my Herbal Breast Massage Oil and working on a new label. I also have a few other things in the works. I've gotten a new resolve to continue on with this blog as well as my work with Holistic Breast Health and Other Self Care Techniques. My heart has been burdened with all of the challenges that women face when it comes to their breast health and just health in general.

So here's a video from Dr. Tenpenny. She's a foremost authority on holistic health, and has extensive information on vaccine awareness. Get a pen and paper. She gives us a short list of supplements that target breast health.

So I had my mammogram. Just the thought of this machine gives me the "hebbie jebbies"! But I got through it and received my letter five days later saying they were pleased to inform me that the results of my mammogram exam were normal. Whew! There's got to be a better way....well actually there is. I don't know about better, but another way. A way not invasive, FDA approved, and can detect breast cancer up to 10 years before a mammogram can. Of course your insurance probably won't pay for it (that's another discussion). I'm thinking though....maybe it will qualify under your flexible spending account and you could be reimbursed for it that way. Thermography, is digital infared imaging based on detecting the heat produced by increased blood vessel
circulation and metabolic changes associated with a tumor’s genesis and
growth. Here's a link to the breast thermography website. It will lead you to a thermograpy center hopefully close to you. My goal is get to the thermography center in 2011.
chemicals in our cleaning products and the links to breast cancer. Of course
any time you hear the word toxic you can
translate that to poison. Ok, so I can point you to pages and pages of information
about chemicals in the products we use and what they do to the body. Any of us
in our right mind, if we really pay attention to what we have in our cabinets
and use on a regular basis and line it up with the safety data we can only draw
one conclusion. All of this "stuff" is bad! Some people are more
sensitive than others and get reactions right away, and some don't. Those that
get reactions most of the time don't realize what is causing the problem and go
to the doctor with ailments and conditions and are given medication ('cause
what else can a doctor do?).

Here’s a scenario, you get up in the morning, brush your teeth with
toothpaste that has a warning label that reads and I quote..”If more than used
for brushing is accidentally swallowed get medical help or contact a Poison Control
Center right away”
Did you realize that the toothpaste you use says that? Did you tell your
children to let you know if they swallow some because it could be poisonous?
You may use mouthwash because that’s going to really get your breath springtime
fresh. Then you wash your face with soap or some sort of cleansing cream
with a few ingredients you can’t pronounce or now come to realize is on the
list of toxic chemicals. Use a moisturizer (chemicals), makeup, face, eyes, and
lips. Then you look down and realize the sink and the toilet need cleaning
right quick, so you do that with your favorite cleaners, spray with a nice air
freshener and you inhale because it smells sooo good! I could go on and on, but
if you go through your day and think about all of the products and chemicals
you are exposed to, you will come to realize that it’s a whole heck of a lot of
chemicals! And we haven’t even talked about food yet!

So back to the issue of breast health. There was a study
done by The Silent Spring Institute
on the use of household chemicals and the incidence of breast cancer. I want
you to look all over this website. The gist of the matter in simple terms is
that there are lots of chemicals that mimic estrogen (xenoestrogens) in the
body. <span style="font-family: "Saturday Sans ICG";">***Estrogen is a
naturally occurring female reproductive hormone. Before the body can use
estrogen, it must bind to proteins called estrogen receptors.
One of the jobs of estrogen is to stimulate cell growth in breast tissue.
Estrogen receptors are located there. When the estrogen fits into the estrogen
receptor, the estrogen signals the cells to divide and multiply. The
estrogen cannot tell the difference between healthy cells and cancerous cells
and attaches to estrogen receptors in both types of cells. Cancer cells
can multiply very rapidly and they are stimulated even more by estrogen. An
over abundance of estrogen results in hormonal disruption. Then you have your
breast cancers, uterine cancer, fibroid tumors, endometriosis, fibrocystic
breasts, children reaching puberty too soon (you’ve seen them), decreased sex
drive, foggy thinking, memory loss…the list goes on and on.

When you hear the words eco-friendly products and you think that’s just for
health nuts. You may want to consider that you may not just be doing something
good for the environment, but more importantly your health and the health of
your loved ones.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12pt;">Once upon a time it used to be expensive to buy
eco-friendly cleaning products Since being “green” is like the coolest thing
you can be, Clorox and
companies that made the really bad stuff have suddenly jumped on the
bandwagon and and now produce non toxic cleaners as well. You can be
industrious and make some of your own. There are plenty of blogs out there like
Healthychild.org
that can share safe, easy options for cleaning your home
The sunshine vitamin.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that promotes absorption of calcium and phosphorus

Very few foods in nature contain vitamin D. The flesh of
fish (such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel) and fish liver oils are among
the best sources. Exposure to the sun at least 15-60 min depending on your skin tone is the most natural way to absorb vitamin D. Come to find there are a lot of people that are low in D and come to find out I was one of those people. I asked my doctor to test me and he did without question. My level was 25 ng/ml. It should be between 32-100ng.ml. With supplementation my last reading was 39ngml. I'm sure any doctor would say that I was within the normal guidelines. I want mine to be optimal, so I'm striving for at least 50 ng/ml or a bit higher.

According to health and wellness expert, Dr Christine Northrup, a study conducted by Cedric Garland and other prominent vitamin D
researchers determined that women with vitamin D levels above 52 ng/ml
have half the risk of developing breast cancer as those with 13 ng/ml! Someone I love dearly had thyroid cancer and her vitamin d level was 12ng/ml. That was a convincing correlation for me to take this thing seriously. Increasing Vitamin D to optimum levels can:

Improve bone health and prevention of osteoporosis, osteomalacia, and rickets.

Reduce risk of heart disease, stroke, and breast, colon, and other cancers.

Alleviate skin disorders.

Decrease risk of autoimmune disorders, including multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes mellitus, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Enhance mental health and lessening symptoms of seasonal affective disorder, premenstrual syndrome, and depression.

There is speculation that more cancers, autoimmune disorders etc are on the rise because of the new standards set for staying out of the sun. I'm not going to make myself an expert on how much you should take. I'll leave that to you and/or your doctor. As part of your self care, you want to make it your business to know your D levels. You will want to get vitamin d3 (cholecalciferol). I'm not going to tell you how much I take only because I don't want any flack. I will tell you that I order it from Vitacost . Do your research. I hope you look at the video above this post from one of America's favorite doctors, Dr Oz on the subject.Sherri K Scott LMT,CLT Holistic Breast Health Instructorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08216024306305630836noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7759874288416662633.post-77526425854250004182010-10-19T12:49:00.002-04:002010-10-20T08:12:49.388-04:00My Warrior Tee is In !!

As promised here is a picture of me wearing the Ford Cares Warrior in Pink Tee Shirt. I purchased a medium and although I am a medium, it's actually slightly big. I like the stretch but for those who like a tighter fitting tee shirt, you'd want to go down a size smaller than what you are. The signature pink Warrior heads are featured over a pattern of hearts
across the chest, while the Symbol of the Heart is highlighted on
the right arm. Made of supersoft raisin-colored jersey with the
worn in texture of Burn-out material.

Sleeve copy reads: "Heart. Represents those who stand strong with loved ones who battle the disease."
She credits conventional medicine and herbs, meditation and other holistic therapies for her health. Her mission is to bring awareness to breast cancer and breast health. Her website shares information about her product that helps women with their at home self breast exams. It's a device called the LIV (be sure to click on the video link at the bottom of the page on the right to see how to use it). She also has a new cd, Grace and Gratitude Renewed. The lyrics acknowledge a variety of belief systems including, Tibetan
chants, prayers from Judaism and Islam, and a poem from St. Francis of
Assisi. I'm going to buy this cd today! From what I've heard so far it's absolutely beautiful. I so appreciate the soothing, spiritual nature of the music all sung from the heart.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

For several years I've said I was getting one of these great tee shirts and let October go by and never do it. I'm going to buy one and take a
picture of me wearing it, stay tuned.
Ford Motor Company is committed to the cause
of breast cancer awareness 365 days a year. They offer information and
support with a program called Warriors in Pink. Their tee shirts offer
tribal symbols, thus supporting the warrior in every one of us.
The
apparel isn't just PINK, thank goodness. There is something for
everyone in the family as well as such as accessories keyring's,
bandana's, caps, scarves, totes. The Warrior decal for the car is
looking a bit inviting too.
Courage, hope, love, commitment.
Warriors in Pink symbols represent the greatest strengths of Warriors
in the fight against breast cancer. Again in 2010, Warriors in Pink
wear and gear display the symbols of the Warrior in the year’s most
fashion-forward colors and styles. 100% of the net proceeds go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which means that you become a Warrior every time you buy.

This fight is definitely 365 days a year. Let's support the groups that support the cause. Do you have a group that you support? Let me know in the comments.
My beautiful Aunt Miriam Richardson lost her fight with breast cancer this past week. Since her diagnosis, her spirit was always full of light and love. Whenever I spoke with her, she was upbeat and positive (even when she probably didn't feel too good). In her voice was the unspoken message, to not feel sorry for her. She took her chemo, she traveled, she enjoyed her family and she was a blessing to every life she touched. There was a time that we thought the cancer was in remission and we could breathe a sigh of relief. As time continued the cancer metastasized and though the news wasn't good, her faith kept her strong and she faced her fight with strength and dignity. She was an example of living life to the fullest and caring for others.

The gathering of her family and friends from far and wide will be a testimony to the life of a wonderful spirit in the person of my Aunt Miriam.
page and Daya posted this link to a great talk
from Dr. William Li, President of the Angiogenesis Foundation. He was
explaining angiogenesis. Angiogenesis is the process that the body uses to grow
blood vessels for different purposes at different times. "Abnormal blood vessel
growth, either excessive or insufficient, is now recognized as a “common
denominator” underlying many deadly and debilitating conditions, including
cancer, skin diseases, age-related blindness, diabetic ulcers, cardiovascular
disease, stroke, and many others. The list of diseases that have angiogenesis
as an underlying mechanism grows longer every year". The main thrust of the talk
was about food being a preventative for cancer. In the infinite wisdom of our
creator, an array of foods, fruits, vegetables, spices, herbs can heal the body
from illness and dis-ease. It's my opinion that many processed foods
laced with chemicals and preservatives could be the cause of many illnesses and
dis-eases.

Here is a list
of foods that are antiangiogenic. And if what the doctor says is true about
synergistic foods, then if I combine, let’s say (a big favorite of mine) red
wine and dark chocolate then I'm doing my body a favor. I'm also ordering the
sencha tea and jasmine tea from Vitacost.
I already knew about the Sencha tea being one of the best of the green teas from a
great book I have in my collection Foods
to Fight Cancer. I can get a box of 100 pks of green tea for about $5.00 at
my local Asian market or Big Lots but it's not going to give me the health
benefits that I'm drinking it for in the first place. Green tea contains
epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG, one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants.
Japanese green tea contains more EGCG than Chinese teas. So if you're drinking these canned or bottled green teas from the grocery store with over 20 grams of sugar per serving and call yourself doing something good for your body, it's absolutely useless. Sorry :)

At any rate, I thought I'd share this video with you. I hope you find it informative. You are what you eat! I'm guilty of not always doing the right thing in the food department, so this is a challenge to myself as well.

In order for IT to move, we have to move. Unlike the circulatory system which moves on its own, the lymphatic systems movement is dependent upon our movement. It is comprised of lymph vessels, lymph fluid and lymph nodes. The lymph vessels carry the lymph fluid (toward the heart) to the lymph nodes which trap bacteria, cancer cells and other toxic substances that may be in the lymphatic system. The reason this is so important to breast health is because we have lymphatic vessels in the breast which connect to lymph nodes under the arm, inside the chest and above and below the collarbone. Lymph nodes are throughout the body, but for now we're going to concentrate on the ones that affect our breast health.

As women most of us are in bras all day. The restriction leaves little room or time for breast movement. Several health conditions have been associated with the use of underwire bras, such as breast pain, breast infection during lactation, and allergic reactions to the metal underwire. And there are some women who have sensitivities to the chemicals in deodorants. They break out in rashes and boils. The aluminum salts in the deodorants block sweat glands. There are theories about breast cancer and underwire bras and deodorants. I'm not sure if they are the cause or not. I do know our bodies are bombarded with toxins from so many sources. Restriction and lymph flow don't play well together.

We've got to Keep It Moving girls!

Breast massage is easy, it's natural and something you can do for yourself. Become familiar with the feel of your breast daily, not just once a month when you're doing your self breast exam. We want to be EMPOWERED, not helpless as to our breast health.. Daya Fisch, has a wonderful website chock full of information to help understand and see how simple this is. The video above this post is an example of Lymphatic Breast Massage. There are other ways to massage and we'll talk about that at a later time.
A holistic approach is one that incorporates the mind, body and spirit of an individual. Many times it’s the food we eat, the stresses we have and/or the way that we think as to the reason we have dis-eases in the body. Sometimes, it’s neither one of those things. As we take responsibility for our wellness, we will want to educate ourselves about our bodies/ourselves and decide what step we need to take for our health. That may mean different things to different people. There are a lot of experts and so-called experts out there and the information may seem conflicting. When it’s all said and done, it’s our journey and our responsibility. Any information that I provide is just that, information. I may believe wholeheartedly in something, and I may incorporate that “thing” in my lifestyle. My disclaimer is to check it out for yourselves and do the research. I’m not a doctor, but just a regular information seeking girl who doesn’t want to give ALL of her power over the medical establishment.

My intention is to bring information about holistic breast health and other self care techniques. I hope to add some humor and spice and make this a place where we can share.
